Commenting on the Fraser of Allander Institute’s Economic Commentary for June published this morning, Scottish Labour Leader Richard Leonard said:
“The economic challenge that this pandemic has posed must be met by collective action between government, trade unions and businesses and must be met by co-operation between all of the governments of the United Kingdom. Top of the list of urgent actions is the establishment of a Job Guarantee Scheme which Scottish Labour has been calling for since the economic impact of the pandemic became clear.
“Preventing a second wave of infections must be a priority and the actions taken by the Scottish Government must be measured against the potential for this to happen. Now more than ever we need an effective testing and tracking system in place to facilitate our economic recovery.
“This crisis has highlighted the fundamental weaknesses of the Scottish economy and simply cannot be met by the Scottish Government’s ‘case by case’ approach to government intervention.
“It is time for a national industrial strategy to get our economy back on its feet and to relight the flame of hope for a better tomorrow after people have endured so much hardship.”
