Commenting on the Scottish government establishing a review, to report in February, into NHS Lanarkshire's handling of the consultation around the future of Monklands Hospital, Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard said:

"Scottish Labour pressure delivered this review and we will continue to campaign clearly for what local people want - which is for Monklands Hospital to stay in the Monklands community.

“The NHS must be run for the people, who after all own it: decisions about services must reflect that.

“Closing the hospital and relocating services to an area of North Lanarkshire that is less accessible by public transport would be the wrong thing to do, and bad for patients and their families, and for staff.

“The review is the least the government could do - it should be the first step towards keeping the Monklands in the Monklands."
