We must do more to change society so it works on the principles of equality, solidarity and community, the Leader of Scottish Labour Richard Leonard says in his Christmas message.

The message, released as a video that will be posted on his social media channels on Christmas Eve, says Christmas is a time to get together with family and friends, and a time to remember those who need our help.

He says “something needs to change” to end poverty and homelessness, and the growing reliance on foodbanks.

The message ends:

“So this Christmas, let us all commit to do more to bring about the better society we know that we can be.

“A society that works for the many, not just a few.”

The video was shot on location at a Christmas lunch in Edinburgh, organised by Labour's community organising unit, for volunteers from a range of charities and organisations working with families experiencing homelessness and using foodbanks.

The full text of the message is:

“For many people, Christmas is a time to get together with family and friends. But not everybody can.

“So it’s also a time to remember that we need to do so much more as a society to help those in need.

“When one in four children in Scotland are living in poverty, when foodbanks are handing out more parcels than ever before, and when thousands of families are facing Christmas without a home to call their own, something needs to change.

“The Labour Party was founded on the principles of equality, of solidarity and of community.

“These values – of people working together so that no one is held back, of injustice and poverty not being tolerated as somehow inevitable, but challenged and overcome – they are our values.

“So this Christmas, let us all commit to do more to bring about the better society we know that we can be.

“A society that works for the many, not just a few.”
