Responding to reports that ScotRail are approaching retired train drivers to return to the work force because of staffing shortages, Scottish Labour Transport spokesperson Colin Smyth said:
"What an absolutely shambolic situation.
"ScotRail was quick to blame the late arrival of new trains for delays in training drivers but the reality is there was not enough drivers to train.
“The roll out of the new timetable has been chaotic and it is Scotland’s hard pressed rail passengers who are suffering with cancelled or late running services.
“The buck for this mess rests with the SNP government which has handed ScotRail not one, but two, licences to fail on performance and passenger satisfaction.
"What is clear is we need a more accountable railway - that's why Labour would take ScotRail back into public ownership as soon as possible."
