Commenting on the UK Government’s Spring Statement, Shadow Scottish Secretary Lesley Laird said:

“The Chancellor could have used the Spring Statement to make good on the Prime Minister’s claim that austerity is over.

“Instead, he buried his head in the sand and acted as though everything is great. Meanwhile, in the real world, 59 per cent of those living in relative poverty in Scotland live in a household where at least one person is in work and almost one fifth of children are living in poverty.

“The Chancellor offered nothing to WASPI women, nothing to fix the shambolic universal credit system and absolutely nothing to address the scandal of poverty across Scotland.

“In other words – austerity is certainly not over.”
