Commenting on new figures from Scottish Natural Heritage on the state of Scotland’s species, Labour Environment and Climate Change spokesperson Claudia Beamish said:

“The Scottish Government is continuing to fail our most vulnerable wild places. Improvement in the state of features in protected nature sites is flat lining. More than a quarter of the features surveyed in Scotland are still in unfavourable condition. Nearly half of marine mammal features and almost a third of woodland features are in unfavourable condition.

“Some of this can be attributed to invasive species but, as the First Minister herself admitted, the government is hitting only 7 of the 20 Aichi targets on biodiversity and it is patently obvious that the SNP Government’s actions are not enough.

“The Scottish Government must commit to rapidly developing an action plan beyond 2020 so that clear signals are sent across Scotland that this issue must be addressed in a strategic way.”
