Responding to the Prime Minister announcing her intention to resign next month, Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard said:

“Theresa May will end her term as Prime Minister with our country more divided and her promise to tackle the burning injustices that run through our society shattered.

“She will leave the country in chaos as a direct result of her refusal to compromise over self-imposed red lines on Brexit.

“Theresa May needed to go, but we now need to see the back of the Tory government.

“It should not be for Tory party members to pick our next Prime Minister, it should be for the people in a General Election.

“Labour is ready to govern and we will transform our society and our economy so that it works for the many, not the few.”

Shadow Scottish Secretary, Lesley Laird MP, said:

“At a time when the country is in crisis, we are now to be subjected to another Tory leadership election and ultimately an unelected Prime Minister.

“A changing of the guard at the top of the Tory party will fix none of the problems that we face. The only thing that will fix those is a General Election.

“For too long, the most vulnerable have been forced to endure austerity, a punitive welfare system and chronic underinvestment in their communities.

“It is time for a Labour Government that will invest in public services, communities and our people.

"A government that will govern in the interest of the many, now the few.”
