Teacher trade unions have warned Scottish schools should not be reopened prematurely in an official letter to the Education Secretary, John Swinney.

The letter is signed by unions representing teaching staff in all areas of the UK, and has been sent to the education ministers of each of the four nations.

Commenting, Scottish Labour’s education spokesperson Iain Gray said:

“We must make sure we are far better prepared to reopen schools than we were to close them.

“Teachers have done a fantastic job readjusting their learning plans and supporting their pupils at home during lockdown.

“We must not put them, and the public at risk by forcing them back into the classroom too early, without testing and tracing in place, without a proper plan for maintaining social distancing or without the right PPE.”
